Validation. It’s a dangerous path. For artists crippled with self-doubt what is an indicator of self-worth? Record sales, Facebook likes, Twitter followers, online streams, press articles – there’s a fine line between self-promotion and masterbating in public. Some bands self-promotion comes dangerously close to the latter.
What’s this got to do with the latest podcast episode you might ask?
OK, I’ll try to construct a few semi-coherent points. One of the reasons why I enjoy listening to Future Library podcast so much is that it doesn’t have an agenda. It isn’t trying to be part of any local scene or obeying the whims of music PR folk. It’s simply people who are passionate about music and art talking about, well, music and art.
On the podcast page on this site you’ll find links to other podcasts that champion underground music. They’re worthy of your attention without question.
For me, Future Library goes beyond those and is happy to delve into tangents as they arise. It’s a great podcast regardless of how many listeners it lacks, or the press it hasn’t received, or awards it hasn’t won. None of which would matter if they existed.
You can make most things a success nowadays if you throw enough money at something. Hell, there are bands headlining festivals because their record label kept re-releasing a single and kept plugging the life out of it until it became a “hit”. The saying that ‘you can’t polish a turd’ has never been more inaccurate between the birth of the internet, online marketing, and pro tools. Why polish it when you can auto-correct it?
But enough about my poor spelling and grammar…
