From avant-garde black metal to Scots-French leftfield twee pop, we’re getting freaky and sexy on the blog tonight. And there’s a free download too!
Choosing this post’s subject matter was a close call. When in doubt, any tweet about a record I’ve seen from @fraserlaeto is a strong candidate. Listening to IV: Mandragora by Botanist turned out to be the type of freaky that one has to be in a certain mood for. Fans of avant-garde black metal should have a listen. Be warned – it’s proper scary.
Instead I find myself listening to BABE.
In the words of The Guardian, Babe is “a wonderfully strange conflation of Wild Beasts-esque falsetto, a fidgety musical backdrop of chiming guitars and delicate electronic textures“. Make no mistake, if Chvrches were the #1 hipster story of last year then BABE is already a furlong ahead in this year’s race for critical acclaim. Chvrches frontwoman, Lauren Mayberry also happens to be a band member. Or at least sings on the occasional track.
The following piece which may or may not be from a press release informs us that, “Formed by ex Findo Gask members Gerard Black (currently with Francois And The Atlas Mountains) and Michael Marshall along with Thomas Ogden and Amaury Ranger, Babe have been making music across the channel from their native homes in Glasgow and Bordeaux.”
It is without doubt, classic Glasgow pop with leftfield tendencies.
The track ‘Tilt” is available as a free download from Soundcloud. I’ve found myself playing it three times in a row. Tempted to play it a fourth.
BABE play the Glad Cafe, Glasgow on Feb 28th.

Babe’s kickstarter to fund 5 short films is worth a visit for more info (although the funding period has since ended).
DEBUT ALBUM ‘VOLERY FLIGHTY’ IS AVAILABLE TO PRE-ORDER NOW FROM ITUNES.
12″ LP AVAILABLE IF YOU KNOW WHERE TO LOOK.
