Graham Norton’s comment about Romania’s Eurovision 2013 entry summed up how I feel about many people who write words online – “…just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should”.
Writing gig previews and reviews is not an activity I’d planned on doing much of because there’s already a wide variety of Scottish music blogs that do that. The odd exception arises when I either love the bands involved or figure there’s a very high likelihood of the show being a quality one.
So tonight’s post is to highlight a forthcoming Edinburgh show featuring two bands I’ve covered in recent weeks – Curators, and Verse Metrics.
CURATORS are from Edinburgh who, if pushed, might describe themselves as melodic indie-punk-rock plus a preoccupation with minor chords. Their debut album “Is This A Private Fight?” was released in 2010 and saw the band rank highly in many writers’ albums-of-the-year lists, as well as winning them airplay on Radio 1, Kerrang Radio and Radio Scotland to name but a few.
After gigging around Scotland in support of that album, the band lost their then-bassist to the navy, prompting a hiatus while they regrouped. During this time, they began work on what was to become ‘The Cold In The Walls’, a record that is much less produced and more expansive than their previous work, allowing the band to bring their vocal harmonies to the fore whilst continuing to show their love of untamed, raucous guitars.
Due out on Anti-Manifesto in March 2013, “The Cold In The Walls” is a record about change, persistence, hope and loss. It is the sound of a band maturing without ever forgetting the power of loud guitars and raised voices.
They are joined by post-rockers VERSE METRICS, Edinburgh based instrumental post-rock band WE CAME FROM THE NORTH and an acoustic set by TRAPPED IN KANSAS front man FINN LEMARINEL.
Not entirely sure you could call Verse Metrics a post-rock band. Other than that it’s a mighty fine description from the promoter of what to expect on the night of Saturday June 1st from 8pm onwards at Edinburgh’s Opium – Alternative Club & Bar.
Entry is £5 on the door.
