Remember I told you that a band called Dead Temple would be on my radar? Turns out they’ve a gig at The Art School in Glasgow tomorrow night with HIS NAME IS CODEINE. Being confident enough to use Codeine in their name, I had to find out more.
And henceforth, the right honourable gentleman did declare that 2013 would be the year of the ‘batcave’ genre in Glasgow. HIS NAME IS CODEINE have a stripped down, dark shoegazey sound that simmers with suggestion. This is what David Lynch fans might listen to while having slow kinky sex. So it’s a must-listen, obviously.
The following is what the band say about themselves on Facebook…
Dark and hypnotic, soundscape and effect lovin’… His Name Is Codeine is a band of dark, intense, hypnotic, gloomy, pedal gazers armed with melodies to split the wall of sound noise. Hailing from Elgin in the north east of Scotland, His Name Is Codeine is not part of any scene. 100% DIY, they recorded, produced and will release the album by themselves, on their own Dead Book Records.
See? I wasn’t kidding about the David Lynch thing. I mean, it was either that or a Salma Hayek from Dusk Till Dawn reference. You got off lightly.
There’s always the danger with relatively new bands that they only have one decent song. Well, I can assure you that His Name Is Codeine have at least two. The first autoplays when you visit their site. The other is called ‘Not A Number’. Here it is.
As you’d expect, Peenko has already reviewed their forthcoming album, The Only Truth Is Music. It amazes me how prolific Scottish music bloggers can be. That’s a site you definitely should bookmark.
GIG ACTION
Catch both Dead Temple and His Name Is Codeine on Friday night at The Art School – that’s Friday 17th May, from 8pm onward and it’ll be a couple of quid on the door. There’s also a noticeable lack of a Dundee date so perhaps someone could help them out with one.
Although a moot point, it’s not the best band name in the world and the album title does make Idlewild’s ‘Hope Is Important’ sound about as earnest as Achtung Baby. Yup, they’re that potentially interesting that neither of those things matter a jot.
In fact, I’m going to order their album online right now. Eight hundred pence well spent.
