Two bands who’ve been on my radar for awhile, PINACT and MIN DIESEL are releasing a split 7″ and playing a handful of DIY UK shows to promote it. Fuzz pop lovers get on it!
You can always rely on the Daily Mail for a surreal headline. “The kitchen sponge is 200,000 times dirtier than a toilet seat” is possibly a classic. In who’s kitchen? Who tested the sponge?
I may not know much about dirty sponges and some might say I know even less about dirty guitars but the new release from Pinact and Min Diesel, from Glasgow/Aberdeen and Dundee respectively, is thankfully closer to Sonic Youth’s dirty fuzzy bits than Christina Aguilera’s.
Coming at guitar rock from the polar opposite angle to the crisp, clean precision of Atlas : Empire, this noisy duo wouldn’t sound out of place on a bill at The 13th Note around 1997. Or 2013 for that matter.
Min Diesel channel the spirit of bands like Stapleton and Pensioner with more accessibility on record than suggested at live shows. The rough round the edges nature of the recording lends a certain charm to their track “Mother”. As the line in Pulp Fiction goes, “personality goes a long way“. There’s a lot to be said for character over perfection.
Pinact form the other half of this split release with “Beauty Freak”, not unlike Hüsker Dü or Urusei Yatsura. It’s rather fabulous in a lo-fi Fuzzy Pop™ sort of way. You could image them playing it live and everyone jumping around to it.
