“On The Floor” is the new album from Maxwell’s Dead. They are a pop punk band you’ve most likely never heard of. If you have 3 minutes and 27 seconds to spare, keep reading.
Without headspace it is impossible to write. I know this now. After a break in the Highlands, it’s time to kick this blog back into action. There’s a million things I could write about and for some reason the one I’m choosing is a punk band from Dundee called Maxwell’s Dead.
The punk scene in Scotland can already claim victory this year with the release of The Murderburgers latest album on Asian Man Records. That reminds me, I need to go buy it. If you only buy one pop-punk record this year, then your music collection will be rubbish. Luckily for you, Maxwell’s Dead can help you out. Their new album is released this month!
As much as bands like METZ have taken noisy punk and made it too dangerous for TV again – which can only be a good thing – not everyone is blessed with impeccable taste. Sometimes as a band you need to go make some noise and figure out what it is you do best. Maxwell’s Dead tag themselves as punk, rock, ska, and reggae. Given what I said about Bonehouse and yet they have the potential to be excellent, it’s only fair to be consistent and point out that yes, here’s another band who are not trying to invent the wheel.
In fact, one of the best things about “Last Night”, a track currently streaming over on bandcamp, is the lack of trying. Emulating heroes and doing so poorly is the trap too many young bands fall into. If Maxwell’s Dead came on the radio or started playing on my audio stream, it wouldn’t offend me the way a lot of music does. They keep it simple and it does exactly what you’d want. What’s not to like? Even the ska bits are not really that ska. It’s not like Reel Big Fish have burst into your living room and are hitting you over the head with a brass section.
Streaming services are convenient and make life better. Don’t let them fool you though. To keep going, bands need support. Between The Murderburgers and Maxwell’s Dead you can still save your 2013 record collection from becoming stale. Add some pop punk to your life and remember a time before relationships, mortgages, car payments, and whatever it is grownups do these days. Unless of course you’re under the age of twenty in which case you can ignore that last bit.
