Best Scottish album award, SAYaward 2013, was won by RM Hubbert for album 13 Lost and Found. He openly talked about his mental health to STV and explained how he uses his creativity to keep focused.
RM Hubbert winning last night’s SAYaward 2013, awarded to best Scottish album released in 2012, is well deserved.
The sneaking suspicion he would win with album ‘13 Lost and Found‘ was that it ticks all the boxes the judging panel would be looking for. But mostly because it’s a great record.
And I predicted correctly for a change!
Before picking up the album in Fopp I’d only watched live performances on YouTube. I will always have a softspot for anybody who is that talented, passionate about music and doesn’t set off my bullshit radar. On many evenings I’ve enjoyed having it on in the background while reading.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not akin to Coldplay background music – but it is the perfect accompaniment to a chilled out evening with a book.
During an interview with STV after winning the SAYaward, he openly discussed his chronic depression. For other lifelong sufferers these types of media interviews can be incredibly uplifting because you realise you’re not alone – especially in the wake of Stephen Fry’s admission of his own struggles.
This is what RM Hubbert said to STV:
“I haven’t overcome it, I deal with it. This is how I deal with it.”
“I have chronic depression, it comes and goes. I feel better when I talk about it, and I find it easier to talk about it when I’m onstage with a guitar in my lap.”
With a new album in the works and more live shows planned, there’s plenty to look forward to.
