Glasgow’s TYCI is a collective run by women that includes an inspiring blog, live events, zines, a radio show & a podcast. The quality of their output continues to impress me greatly and this blogpost is designed to point one or two more people their way.
I am listening to The TYCI Podcast: Episode 8 as I write this. Most days I see a TYCI tweet and click the link. I’ve been following their work for awhile. So explain to me why I’ve only just realised that Lauren Mayberry of Chvrches is one of the collective? Sometimes I wonder what other obvious pieces of information have seemingly snuck past me in a Metal Gear stylee. My main fear now is writing a piece without falling into clichés or blathering on without any point beyond ‘Go Check Them Out!‘ which is essentially the main aim here.
Previously on this blog I’ve written the following:
At least it’s not as blatantly sexist as the video games industry which generates horrendous stories on a seemingly weekly basis. An issue that I’ll keep raising because as a gamer, those stories make me livid. I’m as bored of all the bro-dude characters in video games as I am of auto-tuned, scantily clad pop groups dancing like amateur strippers in music videos. Only in countries as lacking in proper sex education and lacking a willingness to engage in open sex discussion as there is in the UK & Ireland, do you create the type of environment where such lame titillation can generate an audience for pop mediocrity.
Of course I have never worked in either the music or the games industry. They could be equally misogynistic. When so many movie posters and game box artwork covers involves a-man-with-a-gun then the likes of TYCI provide a much needed reality check.
As with yesterday’s Make That A Take post, this is another collective and being based in Glasgow enables TYCI to use the opportunities around them to maximise their exposure.
I’ve been banging on about podcasts a lot of late but with good reason. Most of us are lucky enough to have smartphones that can download and play audio whenever it suits us. The on-demand aspect means you can listen to the latest episode and hear what records, events and people the group want to champion.
If like me you’re inclined to listen to certain bands like Wild Flag on a continuous loop then this will nudge you in the direction of others like PINS. If memory serves me I watched PINS support Warpaint in Glasgow before Christmas. That was a quality show.
In addition to the podcast there’s a regularly updated TYCI blog with interviews and insights that make it a must-visit site. I’ll list all the links at the end.
In terms of gigs the next one they have lined up is on Saturday 15th February at Bar Bloc in Glasgow. Entry is free before midnight, £2 after. Two acts are playing with a live set from Manchester electro outfit LETTERS TO FIESTA and SOPHIE ELLIS-DECKSTAR (Sophie Galpin from PINS!) on the DJ decks. February’s charity will be PLAN INTERNATIONAL.
